Liposuction

Liposuction is not a technique used to lose weight; it is a cosmetic procedure that removes fat which is resistant to exercise. In reality, we are talking more about a body contouring procedure, which is also referred to as liposculpture.

– Should I lose weight before my procedure?

People often ask us if they should go on a diet before having their liposuction. Either way, you don’t have to lose a lot of weight before your procedure.

However, it is recommended that you lose a modest amount of weight and maintain that weight for the long term. You will therefore need to be active and eat a healthy diet to make it easier to maintain your weight. Then, during the consultation, you will be able to see your options for treating the areas that are resistant to weight loss.

– Why are some areas resistant to weight loss?

Above all, you need to understand that, despite our best efforts, we all have an area of our body that is resistant to weight loss. This is usually because there are more fat cells in that area. The beauty of liposuction is that you can tackle these problem areas. This treatment allows us to remove some of the excess cells in order to obtain a more balanced and harmonious silhouette.

– What does liposuction involve?

At Clinimedspa, we perform liposuction under monitoring using local anesthesia with light sedation. We then make very small incisions through which we can cover large areas. We then aspirate small cylinders of excess fat using blunt cannulas. However, please note the importance of how much fat is removed and how much is left behind on purpose. The main goal is to achieve a smooth and graceful contour and to avoid complications.

– What areas can be treated?

In women, the areas most often treated by liposuction are the abdomen, flanks, inner and outer thighs, and the inside of the knees. Other commonly treated areas include the arms, neck, upper back, armpits, calves, and breasts. In men, these are the flanks (the famous “love handles”), the pectorals (there is sometimes gland and fat), and the abdomen.

– What type of anesthesia do you use?

We perform the procedure under local anesthesia with sedation for the comfort of the patient. In addition, all procedures are one-day procedures performed in our operating suite at our clinic in Brossard. A few minutes after the procedure, the patient will be able to return home accompanied without needing a waking period.

– How long does the procedure take?

Depending on the number of areas to be treated, liposuction takes between 1 and 3 hours, or longer if the procedure is combined with another treatment.

– When will I be able to see the final results of my liposuction?

The complete remodelling of the subcutaneous tissue and skin can take up to a year. However, one month after your liposuction, you will have a good idea of the results. Sometimes, the skin does not tighten as desired to adapt to the new contour. In this case, a skin lift should be considered to excise the excess skin. However, it should be noted that—initially—there are irregularities in the skin that smooth out over time. Sometimes, a little additional surgery needs to be performed under local anesthesia to remove some of the residual fat or to correct an irregularity.

– How long is the recovery time?

When it comes to recovery, it will usually take a few days to a week before you can gradually return to your activities.

– Is there much pain following the liposuction?

In fact, the pain following the treatment is mild and similar to sore muscles after intense training. However, there will be a discharge of pinkish fluid for 24 to 48 hours after the procedure, which may be abundant. In short, this is the excess anesthesia fluid mixed with a little blood, which is draining through the small incisions.

– How long should I wait before taking a shower?

You can take a shower 48 hours after the procedure and quickly return to your normal activities.

– What is the risk of infection following my liposuction?

The risk of infection is low (less than 1%), but it is common to have edema and bruising for 2 to 4 weeks.

– Can liposuction be combined with other procedures?

It is quite possible to combine other treatments, such as BODYtite or FACEtite treatments, with liposuction. Both of these treatments are minimally invasive lipo-firming (lipolysis) procedures that use dual-polarity radiofrequency energy. In short, the heat generated by the radio frequency melts fat cells and provides better reshaping results. In addition, the treatment stimulates the production of collagen in depth and causes the skin to tighten. We use FACEtite to firm the skin of the neck and BODYtite to reshape the body. We can also combine liposuction with tummy tuck, breast lifts or breast augmentation.
