KERATOSIS
—What is keratosis?
Keratosis is a dark, raised, and crusted skin lesion (light brown to black) on the epidermis, usually in areas of sun exposure, such as the face, cleavage, and back. However, it can be found anywhere on the body. People often mistakenly believe that it is skin cancer and are relieved to learn during the consultation that it is quite benign. Treatment is easily provided under local anesthesia using electrocautery, which burns and cauterizes the tissue. No stitches are necessary. Subsequently, a crust forms, which falls off in 7–10 days. Healing is rapid, and recurrence in the same place is rare.
