– What is a sebaceous cyst?

Sebaceous cysts can be found all over the body. They are made up of capsules that produce sebum, which grow slowly and gradually. They originate from the migration of epithelial cells under the dermis. Some people develop a single cyst in their lifetime, while others have them on their body regularly. They are often found on the scalp. Under local anesthesia, treatment involves making an incision in the skin to remove the capsule and its contents. The chances of recurrence are low (5%), but this can happen if a piece of the cyst is accidentally left in place.
